Gemba Walk
Gemba Walk is a fundamental Lean and Six Sigma practice where managers and leaders go to the actual place where work is performed to observe processes, understand workflow, and identify opportunities for improvement directly from the source.
What is Gemba?
The term "Gemba" comes from Japanese and means "the real place" or "the actual place." In manufacturing and service industries, Gemba refers to the location where value is created - the factory floor, the service desk, the operating room, or any place where the actual work happens.
Key Principles of Gemba Walk:
- Go See: Visit the actual workplace to understand reality
- Ask Why: Use the 5 Whys technique to uncover root causes
- Show Respect: Value the knowledge and experience of frontline workers
- Observe Without Interference: Watch processes without disrupting normal workflow
